Jason Ronzani, USC Graduate Student (Masters), Film Production Linhui Wang, USC Graduate Student (Masters), Animation 2014 For this animation, Linhui Wang and I wanted to capture the dreamy qualities of Lewis Carroll’s work by using “Alice in Wonderland” inspired imagery that flows like a stream of consciousness from one scene to the next. In our brainstorming session, we each drew a series of images then laid them out next to each other and pieced them together in a sequence. We decided to use the Cheshire cat as a gateway into the rabbit hole. Then, after a barrage of marching card soldiers, a beautiful garden is revealed. Lewis Carroll plays with themes of size and maturity in his story, so when Alice enters the garden she grows in size while skipping innocently through the scene. As for the design, we were inspired by many of the pieces in the Lewis Carroll Collection, but the loose brush strokes and bright colors of Salvador Dhali’s interpretation had the greatest impact on us. Linhui digitally painted beautiful colors against a black background to enshroud the scenes in mystery. Finally, the sound was key in creating a dreamscape that ranged from moody and mysterious to playful and magical. In the end, we want our piece to feel like the dreams or memories many of us experience after reading Lewis Carroll’s work.
